This is a look behind the scenes into how we create new virtual races. It’s alot of work to make a new race and this is an exclusive behind the scene breakdown of what it takes.

1. Choosing a theme and storyboarding
We’re an audio story company and the virtual run is accompanied by a story. The story should give you motivation to RUN, what would make you want to run? Running away from an erupting volcano seems like a fun and good reason!
In this Volcano race, you’re sent to collect samples in a supposedly dormant volcano and…..you’ll need to buy the package to find out.
2. First sketch
The look of the medal is really important to us. The virtual medal needs to look so good, you’d want to buy it just for the medal.
Our designer Pink came up with 2 designs. The first one is a volcano that opens up and the second is more of an expedition badge. The team voted for the cool volcano.
3. Second draft
Now that we like the concept, we develop it some more. What can we do to make it even cooler? To over deliver. What if we added NFC technology to it so that when you tap it on your phone, you get something? Now, that would be cool!
This would be our volcano virtual race medal the FIRST in the world with NFC. However, it’s never been done before and you can’t add an NFC chip to metal. We needed to come up with a creative way….
4. Adding colour
Now that we have a concept we like, let’s add colour! At this point, it’s starting to look really cool.
5. Box and details
To really blow people away, we need to pay attention to the details. The packaging, the box, the ribbon that holds the medal all matter. The experience of getting the medal should be awesome!
6. 3D render
Designing a virtual race medal is not easy because it’s a 3D object. We need to render and look at it’s colour and texture before we send it off to production.
Conclusion
Designing and launching a new virtual race takes alot of heart and effort. We want to make every single one of them awesome. We want to do work we are proud of.
We hope you enjoy this one!
